How to Color Series
Easy way to start your coloring
Coloring can be both relaxing and creative — and with a few simple steps, you can make every illustration truly come alive. Here’s how to approach it:
Step 1 — Understand the Character
Each page is labeled, so it’s easy to identify the animal.
For example, if you see an opossum, start by looking up references — photos or illustrations of real animals. This helps you understand their natural colors and features. Use these as a base to keep your coloring believable and harmonious.
Step 2 — Set the Mood
Before you begin, decide on the atmosphere of the scene.
For instance, you might choose an autumn mood — warm, cozy, slightly golden. This will guide your entire color palette and make the illustration feel cohesive.

Note: colors don’t have to be exact — feel free to use the closest shades you have.
Step 3 — Start with the Obvious
Begin by coloring the character and elements where the colors are more predictable:
  • Leaves and branches → autumn tones like red, orange, and gold
  • Clay or pottery → natural browns and earthy shades
This builds a solid foundation and helps you ease into the process.
Step 4 — Add Creativity
Now comes the most fun part — imagination.
Clothing, accessories, and decorative objects (like vases or pottery) can be as bright and expressive as you like.
You can:
  • Take inspiration from real life or Pinterest
  • Follow color palettes you love
  • Or invent your own unique combinations
There are no strict rules here — this is your space to experiment.
Step 5 — Light, Shadows & Final Details
Add depth and bring your illustration to life with light and shadows.
Use slightly darker tones for shadows and lighter shades or highlights to emphasize volume and form.
For the final touch, refine the linework:
use acrylic markers or gel pens to trace and enhance the outlines, add small details, and make the illustration look clean and polished.
Final Tip
Don’t worry about perfection — every page is your personal interpretation.
